During the early 1980s there was a good deal of fighting around the small
bush town of Katima Mulilo, on the Zambezi River, about 60 miles upstream
from the Victoria Falls. The South West African Police Force (SWAPF) had a
lot of people on the beat, and they needed somewhere to relieve themselves
outside the police station, since going inside meant penetrating several
layers of security, which wasted a lot of time.
Across the dusty road from the police station was a large baobab tree, and they built themselves a lavatory inside it! Local craftsmen cut a small room in the huge trunk, and fitted it out with not only a proper flushing water-closet but also an overhead light and a lockable steel door which kept the lavatory exclusive for SWAPF.
